Here's how you can use AI to assist with your holiday shopping on Google.
- Google is using artificial intelligence to try to make holiday shopping easier.
- You can search for gift ideas on Google by typing in a phrase.
- This holiday season marks the first time that generative artificial intelligence is accessible to the general public.
On Thursday, new AI tools were announced that can assist you with holiday shopping. For instance, if you're looking for gift ideas for your 4-year-old nephew who enjoys science, you can use a command like "gifts for a 4-year-old who likes science."
Google is using generative artificial intelligence in its products, and this latest example comes before the holiday season, which may encourage people to use the site instead of others. According to the National Retail Federation, holiday spending is projected to reach record highs, ranging from $957.3 billion to $966.6 billion.
Google Shopping has three new features that were announced Thursday:
- What kind of gift might a person like based on their interests?
- Describe the item you want to generate a photorealistic image of, and it will be created for you.
- The platform now provides 40 photos of diverse individuals to simulate a virtual clothing fitting.
To enable gifting features and image generation, individuals can go to Search Labs and activate Search Generative Experiences (SGE).
Here’s a look at what’s new:
Google's search generative experience offers the first feature, which allows you to enter a phrase into the search bar, such as "great gifts for home cooks," and it will return a list of gift ideas, descriptions of items that a home cook would appreciate, and other non-physical offerings like cooking classes.
Rewritten: For a 7-year-old who wants to be an inventor, a $25 Inventor's Box set from Target is recommended.
Google's second new tool utilizes SGE and allows for precise searches by describing the desired item. For example, a search for a "puffy, colorful metallic-looking jacket" may yield results similar to the image provided.
The AI-generated photorealistic image of various items will be available in the U.S. in December, and clicking on it will reveal actual products that match the description. This tool is ideal for when you're unsure of what you want but want to find something for yourself.
You can now use Google to see how a product might look on you. By searching for "brown jacket at J-Crew," you'll get photos of 40 different men and women of various shapes, sizes, and backgrounds, allowing you to see what a piece of clothing looks like on different models. This tool was previously available for women's tops but has now been expanded to include a broader range of products.
Google Shopping has previously utilized generative search.
