Over 1.25 million new users have joined micro-blogging startup Bluesky in the past week, suggesting that some social media users are altering their behavior in the wake of the U.S. presidential election.
The influx of users on Bluesky highlights the app's ability to differentiate itself from competitors X, owned by Elon Musk, and Threads. Most of the new users are from the US, Canada, and the UK, according to a statement made by the company on Wednesday.
Jay Graber, CEO of Bluesky, stated in a CNBC interview that the company is thrilled to offer a superior social media experience to all users.
Although Bluesky has experienced an increase in users, its total base is still significantly smaller compared to its competitors. The Seattle startup has 15.2 million total users, while Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg claims that Threads has 275 million monthly users. In May, Elon Musk stated that X had 600 million monthly users, but market intelligence firm Sensor Tower reported that X's monthly base was 318 million users in October.
Similarweb, an internet traffic and monitoring service, stated in a Tuesday blog that journalists, politicians, and news enthusiasts have been praising Bluesky as a superior X alternative to Threads.
Some users with new Bluesky accounts stated that they had joined the service because of Musk's support for President-elect Donald Trump.
One user on Bluesky expressed disbelief that Elon Musk has turned Twitter into a platform for spreading false information and propaganda, with a focus on promoting Donald Trump.
This is Bluesky's second notable surge in the last couple of months.
In September, Bluesky gained 2 million new users following the Brazilian Supreme Court's suspension of X due to non-compliance with regional content moderation policies and lack of a local representative.
