Google DeepMind's AI features are now available for YouTube Shorts creators.
  • On Wednesday, YouTube unveiled AI capabilities for its Shorts platform that utilize Google's DeepMind video production technology.
  • With Veo, creators can incorporate AI-generated backgrounds into their videos and generate six-second clips using written prompts.
  • Neal Mohan, CEO of YouTube, expressed hope that AI will assist creators in producing more Shorts videos through Veo.

On Wednesday, YouTube unveiled AI capabilities for its Shorts platform that utilize DeepMind's video-generation model.

The Veo AI backgrounds are a superior version of the AI-generation feature that YouTube announced in 2023, called Dream Screen. The company plans to release its Veo AI background feature later this year, while the six-second AI clips will be made available in 2025.

YouTube announced new features in the YouTube Studio app that will enable creators to use AI to generate titles, thumbnails, and video ideas. These features will be released in late 2024, according to YouTube.

Some YouTubers have raised concerns that their videos are being used to train AI models that created Veo.

"Thomas Simons, a comedian with over 15 million subscribers on YouTube, expressed his lack of enthusiasm towards AI technology, stating, "I'm not sure how I feel about all this AI stuff, and it doesn't make me feel confident or loving.""

Large language models can now be accessed by creators for free, thanks to the perspective offered by generative AI on the creator economy.
