The company's search and ads boss, Prabhakar Raghavan, is being replaced by longtime Google executive Nick Fox.
Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet, announced that Raghavan will be taking on the role of chief technologist after 12 years of leading teams across the search company. Raghavan will continue to report to Pichai in the new CTO role, as per a statement from the company to CNBC.
""Prabhakar has decided to take a significant step in his career by closely partnering with me and Google leaders to provide technical direction and leadership, and to grow our culture of tech excellence," Pichai wrote in the post."
Google is restructuring its teams to speed up in the AI race, where it faces intensified competition, while also dealing with antitrust lawsuits related to its search and ads business.
Raghavan's leadership team has included Fox for a long time. Now, he will be leading Google's Knowledge and Information division, which encompasses the company's search, ads, and commerce products, as Pichai announced.
Fox has been a Google employee since 2003 and has recently served as vice president for product and design for the company's Assistant product. Prior to this role, he worked within the company's ads business unit.
Nick has played a crucial role in developing Google's AI strategy and has worked closely with Prabhakar, as stated by Pichai.
Since 2018, Raghavan has led the knowledge and information unit. Recently, he informed employees that the market reality has changed significantly, stating that "things are not the same as they were 15-20 years ago," according to CNBC.
Google's AI direct-to-consumer products team, known as the Gemini app, will now be part of Google DeepMind under AI head Demis Hassabis.
Improving feedback loops and enabling fast deployment of new models in the Gemini app will bring the teams closer together, as written by Pichai.
Pichai wrote that the move of the Assistant teams to the Platforms and Devices unit will enable them to work more closely with the product surfaces they are developing for.
