  • On Monday, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, issued a threat to prohibit the use of Apple devices in his companies.
  • At its annual developers conference, Apple announced a partnership with OpenAI, which Musk deemed an "unacceptable security violation."
  • Siri, Apple's voice assistant, will have access to OpenAI's ChatGPT for generating chatbot responses. Users will be prompted for consent, and their data will not be recorded.

On Monday, Elon Musk, CEO of both Tesla and SpaceX, threatened to prohibit the use of certain devices within his companies following Apple's recent partnership with OpenAI.

On his social media platform X, Musk expressed worries about the safety of users' information with Apple and OpenAI.

The software integration between the two companies was deemed by him as a "security violation" that is "unacceptable," and he stated that Apple is "clueless" about the situation.

On Monday, Apple unveiled its long-awaited foray into artificial intelligence, which included an update to its voice assistant Siri. As part of the update, Siri can now utilize OpenAI's popular ChatGPT chatbot. Apple stated that users will be prompted for permission to share their questions with ChatGPT, and their requests and information will not be recorded.

"It's absurd that Apple isn't smart enough to create their own AI, but they can ensure OpenAI protects your security and privacy," Musk wrote after the event.

If Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level, the company will ban Apple devices, as specifically stated.

Apple has disclosed to CNBC that it is utilizing its own AI and the integration with OpenAI is an optional feature.

Musk directly responded to Cook's post and stated that he will prohibit Apple devices from his companies unless Cook ends the "creepy spyware." He also mentioned that visitors will be required to leave their Apple devices at the entrance.

As of Dec. 31, Tesla, Musk's largest company, had 140,473 employees worldwide. However, this year, the company has implemented layoffs that exceeded 10% of its headcount.

In 2015, Musk co-founded OpenAI and later stepped down from its board in 2018. Recently, he has been critical of the company and CEO Sam Altman, particularly regarding their abandonment of the company's mission to develop AI for the benefit of humanity. As a result, in March, Musk sued OpenAI and Altman, among others, alleging this abandonment.

Musk secured $6 billion in funding for his OpenAI competitor, xAI, whose initial product, Grok, aims to provide a politically incorrect response to ChatGPT. Besides Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, and Boring Company, Musk is also the founder of these companies.

Musk and OpenAI didn't immediately respond to CNBC's requests for comment.
