On Thursday, Elon Musk hosted a live discussion with Alice Weidel, the leader of Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, on his social network X to promote the party.

""I strongly recommend that people vote for AfD," said Musk, CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and X, about a half hour into the conversation."

The German domestic intelligence services have labeled the AfD as a "potential extremist group." The party advocates for strict asylum policies, mass expulsions, reductions in social and welfare benefits in Germany, and the lifting of restrictions on combustion engine vehicles.

Thierry Breton, a former European commissioner for the internal market, stated in a post on X on Jan. 4 that a live discussion would give AfD and Weidel a significant and valuable advantage over their competitors.

The AfD previously opposed the construction of Tesla's electric vehicle factory near Berlin due to concerns that it would create employment opportunities for non-German citizens.

Elon Musk is supporting the AfD party before the upcoming German general election on February 23, despite the party having only around 20% public support, according to DW reporting. However, it is unlikely that the AfD will be part of a coalition government as most other parties have pledged not to work with them.

European government officials have been angered by Musk's earlier endorsements of AfD, including tweets praising the party and an editorial in a German newspaper. Additionally, Musk, the world's richest individual, has also supported far-right and anti-establishment candidates and causes in the U.K.

The leaders of France, Germany, Norway, and the U.K. condemned Musk's involvement in their countries' elections, as previously reported by NBC News.

In November's election, Musk, one of President-elect Donald Trump's top backers, promoted Trump in a live-streamed discussion on X. Prior to that, he hosted a conversation with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who lost to Trump in the Republican primary.
