Samsung announced a new chip on Thursday that will be used for mixed reality devices, which are likely to compete with Apple's Vision Pro headset.

Last year, Qualcomm, Samsung, and Google announced a partnership to develop mixed-reality devices. Mixed reality technology enables users to superimpose digital content onto the real world through the use of a headset. The latest chip, capable of running Android applications, suggests that the companies may opt to launch a more affordable headset compared to Apple's $3,499 Vision Pro, which is set to launch early this year. Apple's headset, powered by its M2 processor, is similar to some Macs.

The Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip, used in the Meta Quest 3, is an upgrade from the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2, with enhanced capabilities for sharper screens and better graphics.

Hugo Swart, vice president and general manager of extended reality at Qualcomm, stated that the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 will elevate XR productivity and entertainment with 4.3K resolution, providing stunningly clear visuals for applications such as room-scale screens, life-size overlays, and virtual desktops.

It’s unclear when new products from Samsung and Google will launch.
