Apple Intelligence released a beta version of its long-awaited ChatGPT integration on Wednesday.
The company has unveiled its response to the AI craze this summer, but is gradually introducing its functionalities to its users. Investors are optimistic that the introduction of AI tools will stimulate a surge in iPhone upgrades since the features are only accessible on newer models.
The official public release of Apple Intelligence, which has been available in previews for developers and early adopters, will be part of the upcoming iOS 18.1 release, Apple announced. The latest batch of features is included in a beta version of iOS 18.2 for software developers that was released on Wednesday. Apple developer betas usually undergo a cycle of weeks before they are made available to the public.
The preview included with iOS 18.2 contains:
- New features to enable the user to specify how Apple Intelligence should rephrase a section of text.
- Genmoji, Apple's image generator for new emojis
- Image Playground, Apple's AI image generator
- A tool called Image Wand enables users to eliminate objects or distractions from photographs.
- Integration with OpenAI's ChatGPT
The long-awaited ability for Siri to perform actions within apps is not included in this update, but is expected to be added soon.
Answers from ChatGPT
In June, Apple announced its integration with OpenAI's chatbot, ChatGPT, for more sophisticated problems or questions. While Apple Intelligence and Siri primarily rely on Apple's chips inside its devices, the company stated that users can obtain responses from OpenAI's chatbot for more complex issues.
At the company's developer conference, Apple demonstrated how the ChatGPT integration will function. When Siri recognizes a question that it believes would be better answered by ChatGPT, it will request permission from the user to do so. The user does not need an OpenAI account. Additionally, users will be able to utilize ChatGPT in text fields to generate text.
The phone's camera can recognize text, objects, and even translate signs in real-time with the help of ChatGPT as part of Apple's Visual Intelligence feature.
OpenAI's partnership with the two companies was a significant achievement, resulting in a $157 billion valuation after a recent financing round.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was seen on Apple's campus after the company announced a deep integration with OpenAI models into its products.
Apple and OpenAI have not disclosed the financial details of their partnership, and Apple did not invest in OpenAI's fundraising round. Apple executives have hinted that other AI models, such as those from Google, may also be integrated with Apple Intelligence in the future.
The first wave of Apple Intelligence features, including the ability to rewrite text, a new Siri look, and notification summaries, will be released next week as part of iOS 18.1.
