Anthropic has gained a new member in the form of Jan Leike, a lead safety researcher at OpenAI who recently resigned from the company.

On May 15, Leike announced his resignation from OpenAI, just days before the company dissolved the superalignment group he co-led. This team, formed in 2023, focused on long-term AI risks. Meanwhile, OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever announced his departure in a post on X on May 14.

"Leike announced on X that he is thrilled to join AnthropicAI to continue the superalignment mission. His new team will focus on scalable oversight, weak-to-strong generalization, and automated alignment research."

Anthropic has secured up to $4 billion in funding from a company that has committed to a minority stake in the company.

Leike wrote that leaving OpenAI was one of the hardest things he has ever done, as he believes we urgently need to develop smarter AI systems that can control themselves.

However, some industry experts have raised concerns about the speed at which companies are releasing powerful AI products to the public, without fully considering the potential societal harm they may cause.

OpenAI, backed by , announced on Tuesday the formation of a new safety and security committee led by senior executives, including CEO Sam Altman. The committee will provide safety and security recommendations to the company's board for OpenAI projects and operations.

Claude 3, a ChatGPT rival launched by Anthropic in March, has received funding from Amazon, as well as other investors including Sequoia and Andreessen Horowitz.
