The U.S. tech giant's cloud computing unit, Web Services, plans to launch an infrastructure region in Taiwan by early 2025 to meet the high demand for cloud services in the Asia-Pacific region, the company announced Wednesday.

Firms can leverage the new AWS region in Taiwan to take advantage of cloud computing and utilize AWS technologies such as compute, storage, databases, analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence, as stated by Prasad Kalyanaraman, vice president of infrastructure services at AWS.

An AWS region is a physical location where data centers are clustered.

AWS is launching a new region with three availability zones, bringing the total number of availability zones to 108 across 34 geographic regions. An availability zone is a self-contained and geographically distinct location with multiple data centers that have independent power, cooling, and physical security.

AWS announced that it will provide a greater choice for running applications and serving end users from data centers located in Taiwan, allowing customers to keep their content in Taiwan.

According to the statement, the cloud service provider will also be investing billions of dollars in Taiwan over the next 15 years.

AWS has recently announced a $9 billion investment in Singapore to expand its cloud infrastructure and services in the country.

In March 2023, AWS announced its plans to invest at least $6 billion into a new region in Malaysia by 2037, following its October 2022 announcement of a $5 billion investment in a new region in Thailand over 15 years.

In December 2021, AWS launched a region in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia.

In addition to and , other tech giants have also been investing billions of dollars in the Asia-Pacific region.

Google recently declared that it will invest $2 billion in Malaysia and establish its first data center and cloud region in the country.

Microsoft announced plans to invest in AI and cloud technology in Southeast Asian countries, including Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia, as part of its increased focus on the region.

In the first quarter of this year, Synergy Research Group reported that AWS held 31% of the market share in cloud infrastructure services, making it the leader, while Microsoft Azure came in second with a lower market share.
