A new Kindle e-reader with a color display was announced on Wednesday for the first time ever.
Since the introduction of the Kindle in 2007, all devices have had black-and-white screens. However, the new Kindle features a display that ensures colors remain vibrant and clear even when users zoom in on images.
The Kindle Colorsoft, a $279 device from Amazon, boasts "weeks of battery life" and is now available for preorder, with shipping set for Oct. 30.
At a press event in New York on Tuesday, Amazon's devices chief, Panos Panay, announced the largest single refresh of the Kindle lineup, including a refreshed $399 Kindle Scribe with new note-taking features, an updated $159 Kindle Paperwhite, and a 12th generation Kindle that costs $109.
The Amazon Kindle Scribe, launched in 2022, includes a pen that enables users to jot down notes, create to-do lists, and write directly on the pages of the books they're reading. The new Active Canvas feature allows users to take notes directly on e-book pages, and the text will automatically adjust to flow around them. Additionally, users can take notes in the margins of the book and conceal them for later use.
The Kindle Scribe now includes a new feature that utilizes generative artificial intelligence to condense extensive notes into a succinct list. This feature employs Bedrock, a software platform that enables users to access massive language models from Amazon and other corporations, such as Anthropic and Stability AI. The device is currently available for preorder and will be shipped on December 4th.
The new Kindle Paperwhite boasts a faster performance and a larger 7-inch display, compared to the previous model's 6.8-inch display. Amazon claims that the 12th generation Kindle is its most compact e-reader yet, with a brighter display. Both devices will be available starting Wednesday.
