  • A new reality competition series, "Beast Games," promises to be the largest ever, with 1,000 contestants vying for a $5 million cash prize.

On Monday, Jimmy Donaldson, also known as MrBeast on the internet, announced a new reality competition show in collaboration with MGM Studios, which aims to further blur the lines between YouTube and traditional television.

A new reality competition series, "Beast Games," promises to be the largest ever, with 1,000 contestants vying for a $5 million cash prize.

Donaldson is the most popular individual creator on YouTube, with over 389 million subscribers across all his channels, and is the fourth most popular creator on TikTok. His large-scale productions on YouTube are comparable to those of a professional TV operation, featuring an extensive crew, highly developed sets, and big cash prizes. In the past, Donaldson's videos have included trapping himself in solitary confinement for seven days, attempting to destroy a Lamborghini with a train, and running his own version of Squid Game.

According to an interview on "The Colin and Samir Show," Donaldson's YouTube videos cost between $4 million and $5 million each, and the new show will have an even larger budget. Puck reported that the deal between Donaldson and Amazon was worth approximately $100 million.

"Our videos are now 20 times better, thanks to the lack of financial constraints," Donaldson stated on the podcast. "With an unlimited budget, I can do anything I want, which is incredibly liberating and mind-blowing."

According to Donaldson, working with a streaming service enables him to escape the algorithms and values that excel on YouTube, such as thumbnails, video length, and title. Nevertheless, MrBeast's videos can garner between 300 million and 500 million views each, and there are only 80 million active Amazon Prime Video households in the U.S., as per Amazon.

The trend of creators diversifying their revenue by expanding their content beyond social media platforms is not new, as seen with the release of a Netflix documentary by the YouTube group "Sidemen" and the third season of the reality show of TikToker Charli D'Amelio on Hulu.

"Donaldson stated on the podcast that they are revolutionizing their content by creating a six-hour video series, which is significantly longer than their usual 20-minute videos. The character development and storytelling in this new series will be exceptional compared to their previous work."
