  • An election night special hosted by Brian Williams will be Amazon's first foray into live news programming, the company announced Thursday.
  • Amazon is set to broadcast a special event featuring live election results and analysis on its Prime Video platform.
  • The company has increasingly moved into live programming, primarily in sports.

The company announced on Thursday that it will host a live news coverage special anchored by Brian Williams, marking its first foray into this area.

A non-partisan presentation of election results and analysis will be available on Prime Video starting at 5 p.m. ET on Nov. 5, according to Amazon. The one-night special will pull information from a variety of third-party news sources.

Across the political spectrum, special and interview analysts will be led by Williams. Viewers will not need a Prime subscription to access the stream.

""This venture, which marks a new chapter in my 41-year career in the media industry, feels like the next big thing. After leaving NBC News in 2021, I am excited to bring this first-of-its-kind venture to the global marketplace of Amazon," Williams stated in a release."

Recently, Amazon has been expanding its presence in live sports programming on its Prime Video streaming service, with the aim of increasing subscriptions and generating additional revenue for its successful advertising business. In July, Amazon secured an 11-year rights deal to broadcast NBA games starting from the 2025-26 season. Additionally, Amazon streams "Thursday Night Football" games and holds the rights to some NHL games.

The company is now positioning itself as a "growing home for news viewers" by offering streaming news channels on Prime Video, including live content from ABC News Live, CNN Headlines, LiveNOW from FOX and NBC News Now.

Disclosure: NBC and CNBC are divisions of NBCUniversal.
