During the fourth-quarter earnings call, Elon Musk, the CEO, stated that the company will not introduce any new models this year and is not currently working on a $25,000 car.

He stated in his initial comments that the persistent chip shortage would hinder the release of new model vehicles, ultimately leading to a decrease in the total number of vehicles delivered.

We would not introduce new vehicle levels this year because it would not make any sense due to the constraints, particularly the chips' constraints.

Tesla risks losing market share to Ford and Rivian, which are set to launch their fully electric F-150 Lightning and R1S SUVs, respectively, in the first half of this year. Additionally, Ford has announced plans to triple production of its Mustang Mach-E, a competitor to Tesla's Model 3 and Y, with expectations of selling over 200,000 units per year by 2023.

The GMC Hummer EV, another likely competitor, was launched to customers in December 2021. General Motors' fully electric take on the truck is the first to incorporate the company's in-house developed Ultium platform, motors, and batteries, which it plans to use as the foundation for its new electric vehicles.

Musk stated that a lower-priced Tesla for mainstream consumers is not currently being developed.

Musk stated that although they are not currently working on the $25,000 car, they will do so at some point. They have too much on their plate at the moment.

Tesla developing a $25,000 car is a possibility that Musk has repeatedly suggested. In 2018, he stated that it would take the company around three years to create such a vehicle, though he did not provide a specific timeline for when it might become available. At the 2020 shareholder's meeting, Musk announced that Tesla would launch a $25,000 car within the next three years.

In 2020, Musk claimed that he was confident that they could create a fully autonomous $25,000 electric vehicle within three years. However, it's worth noting that Musk has a history of being overly optimistic with his predictions.

Toni M. Sacconaghi Jr., Bernstein Senior Analyst, inquired, "Is it realistic to sell more than 3 million vehicles with 2 high volume cars and Cybertruck in 2024 if there is no $25,000 vehicle being worked on?"

"It's clear from the questions that the significance of Full Self Driving is not fully understood," Musk responded irritably.

The CEO proposed that Tesla's driverless vehicle technology, which is still in development, would improve the appeal of the company's cars, leading to high sales volume, even without introducing new models at lower price points.

Although Musk stated that Tesla has too many tasks to create new model vehicles in 2022, he announced plans for the company to develop not only robotaxis but also a humanoid robot, known as Optimus, which could assist in factory operations.
