On Monday, a man from California was given six months in federal prison for allegedly lying to federal investigators about an airplane crash he intentionally caused for a YouTube video.
Trevor Daniel Jacob, a former Olympic snowboarder, pleaded guilty to destroying and concealing a tangible object with the intent to obstruct a federal investigation, as stated in the plea agreement filed in the Central District of California. The stunt was filmed for a company that sponsored him and promoted their wallet.
On November 24, 2021, in Santa Barbara County, California, Jacob embarked on a solo flight and parachuted out of the plane with a video camera and selfie stick. Following his landing, he hiked to the crash site in Los Padres National Forest. Two days later, he reported the wreck to the National Transportation Safety Board.
According to the plea agreement, the NTSB launched an investigation and instructed Jacob to preserve the wreckage of the plane. However, Jacob lied to investigators on multiple occasions over the course of two months.
In December 2021, Jacob and a companion were accused of hiring a helicopter to visit the wreckage site and retrieve the remains, which were then transported to Santa Maria, California, where Jacob's truck was waiting. Afterward, Jacob dismantled the plane and discarded it in small pieces. Later that month, the suspect posted a video on YouTube featuring footage from the cameras he had placed on the crashed plane and the camera he used while parachuting.
