In three years, Motorola is predicted to be the third-largest smartphone player globally, as stated by a top executive at the Chinese tech company that owns the brand.

In 2014, Lenovo, the world's largest personal computer manufacturer, acquired Motorola. Recently, the company has aimed to enhance the brand and position it as a premium smartphone competitor, similar to Samsung and .

In 2020, Lenovo rebooted the iconic Motorola Razr as a foldable smartphone.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Matthew Zielinski, president of international markets at Lenovo, stated that the company has successfully revitalized the Motorola business and has given it top priority, resulting in positive outcomes.

Zielinski stated that in three years, Lenovo and Motorola will be among the top three companies globally.

The global smartphone market is dominated by Apple and Samsung, who together hold approximately 40%.

In the third quarter 2023, Motorola and Lenovo combined had a 4% market share, making them the eighth-largest player globally, according to Counterpoint Research. Despite their global market share, Motorola has found success in certain markets. In the U.S., Motorola is the third biggest smartphone vendor by market share. In Latin America, Motorola is the second-largest player.

Motorola aims to grow its market share in a stable manner in its existing markets until it reaches 10% market share in those regions, which will ultimately increase its global market share.

The premium market segment, where Apple and Samsung reign supreme, is a key component of the growth strategy.

The Razr, with its high price tag, is considered a foldable device. Zielinski stated that Motorola's launch of the Razr was an attempt to target the premium market.

Most Razr smartphone users have switched from non-Android devices, with Android being Google's mobile operating system and iOS being the only other major mobile operating system.

Lenovo’s India push

If necessary, Zielinski stated that Lenovo is prepared to increase production at its Pondicherry, India manufacturing facility.

The Indian government has encouraged electronics manufacturers to produce their products in India, with Apple increasing its iPhone production in the country.

Lenovo considers India to be "one of the most strategic countries," according to Zielinski.

Zielinski stated that with the transition to 5G, the ability to make technology accessible to the masses has become easier, and our portfolio ranging from mobile devices to cloud services allows us to have a broader range of conversations with clients, including the Indian government. Additionally, our focus on local manufacturing and job creation in India aligns with our goal of making technology more accessible to the masses.

We will make as many bets as possible because we believe the expansion of the Indian population is remarkable, and they are exceptional individuals.
