According to Vas Narasimhan, CEO of pharmaceutical firm Novartis, there has been little improvement in pandemic preparedness since the Covid crisis.
Unfortunately, Narasimhan stated at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland that he believes we haven't improved.
During the "inter-pandemic" period, there was not the continued level of investment as hoped for, as he explained.
"Thanks to the remarkable achievements of our industry in developing mRNA vaccines and diagnostic tools, we are now seeing a decline in government investment, despite the end of the pandemic," Narasimhan stated.
Narasimhan stated that if companies de-invest, the space may not receive investment for 10 to 15 years, resulting in a return to the same situation, followed by a pandemic, and a race to recover.
He stated that while we are improving in the science aspect, it would be ideal if we had the same level of preparedness for pandemics as we do in defense and other areas, so we are ready for the next one.
