The U.S. is currently experiencing a shortage of paint.
The paint industry experienced a surge in demand for raw materials during the pandemic due to the increase in DIY projects and home improvement among quarantined consumers. However, the supply was unable to meet the demand.
Florida Paints president Jeff Grasty disclosed that the company holds weekly meetings to discuss the ongoing raw-material shortage and what specific materials they are running low on.
In June 2021, sales at paint and wallpaper stores in the U.S. increased by 7.8% annually to reach $1.34 billion. Although the pace of sales growth has slowed, it remains strong, as evidenced by the latest data showing a sales total of $1.1 billion in November.
The manufacturing of products by Sherwin-Williams and PPG is being hindered by worsening supply chain shortages, according to the two largest paint companies.
The impairment of paint companies is caused by a combination of factors, including supply chain issues and climate change.
According to Tony Piloseno, to ensure that a gallon of paint matches the next one, it is necessary to include the same amount of color pigment in it.
Florida Paints now employs Piloseno, who founded his own paint company and gained a large following on TikTok through his love of mixing paint.
"Sometimes, I receive orders that I can't keep up with," Piloseno stated.
Despite the increase in producer prices for painting and coating manufacturing by 15.7% in December 2021 compared to the previous year, sales have not been affected. In fact, the producer price index rose by 9.7% on a 12-month basis, ending 2021 with the highest calendar-year increase since 2010.
Dan Murad, CEO of the ChemQuest Group, stated that if no changes occur in the chemical supply chain, they anticipate seeing normalcy in the fourth quarter of 2022 and possibly into the first quarter of 2023.
The paint supply chain involves various stages, including raw material extraction, processing, packaging, and distribution. The manufacturing process requires significant resources and energy, which contributes to rising prices.
