  • Robert Blue, CEO of Dominion, stated that the utility is conversing with other major data center clients about small modular reactors.
  • Dominion serves the largest data center market in the world in northern Virginia.
  • Last month, Dominion and Amazon agreed to collaborate on exploring the potential development of a small modular reactor.

Amazon is now collaborating with other tech companies to develop small modular nuclear reactors, following its agreement with a Virginia utility last month to explore the advancement of next-generation technology.

Dominion CEO Robert Blue stated on the company's third-quarter earnings call that it is very encouraging to see large power users, including technology companies, express a willingness to invest, partner, and collaborate to bring this innovative base load carbon-free technology to fruition.

Dominion and have agreed to a memorandum of understanding to investigate the possibility of constructing a small modular reactor near the utility's North Anna nuclear station in Louisa County, Virginia, which would provide 300 megawatts of power to the state.

Blue stated that Virginia is one of the most nuclear-friendly states in the country, with strong bipartisan support for next-generation nuclear initiatives.

Our CEO informed investors that it's not surprising that our large customers would be interested in working with us on advancing nuclear technology, as they view us as a reliable operator in this field.

The CEO stated, "We've been conversing with Amazon, as well as other entities."

Nuclear power is being invested in by tech companies as they search for a dependable and carbon-free source of electricity to power the growing energy demands of AI data centers. Dominion, located in northern Virginia, serves the largest data center market globally.

In 2021, Amazon acquired a data center campus that will be powered by the Susquehanna nuclear plant in Pennsylvania. Microsoft has signed an agreement to purchase power from Three Mile Island as it aims to restart the plant in 2028. Last month, Google agreed to purchase power from Kairos Power, a developer of small modular reactors.

Small modular reactors are expected to decrease capital expenses and accelerate the construction of nuclear power plants. They possess a smaller area than big reactors, allowing for easier placement in theory, and offer a streamlined production process.

Currently, there is no commercial-stage small modular reactor operating in the U.S. Despite the technology's potential.
