One of the world's largest shipping container firms announced on Monday that it may halt all deliveries to and from Russia due to sanctions against the Kremlin following its invasion of Ukraine.

The Danish shipping giant is closely monitoring and preparing to comply with the ever-evolving sanctions and restrictions against Russia as President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine enters its fifth day.

Maersk has stated that it is considering suspending bookings to and from Russia on both ocean and inland routes as part of its preparations.

"We are monitoring advancements while evaluating the most suitable choices for our clients and their shipments."

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has led to the imposition of sanctions by the U.S., European Union, Canada, and Britain. These measures include restricting access to the SWIFT international payment system for certain banks and freezing the assets of Russia's central bank.

Maersk stated on Monday that it would do its "best" to ensure cargo already at sea reaches its intended destination.

The company stated that as air space is gradually being restricted, our air services will be affected.

The stock price of Maersk decreased by 3% following the announcement, with a year-to-date decline of over 11%.

Since 1992, the shipping giant has been operating in Russia and connects to major ports such as St. Petersburg, Novorossiysk, Vladivostok, Vostochny, and Kaliningrad.

The company announced last week that it had halted bookings to and from Ukraine until further notice.
