Local media reports that South Korea's former President Yoon Suk Yeol has been arrested after his impeachment.
- In the country's history, no other sitting president has been arrested before Yoon.
- An attempt to arrest the impeached president was made for the second time on Jan. 3, but it was unsuccessful.
- Over 3,000 police officers were reportedly involved in the second attempt to secure access to the presidential residence.
A South Korean president, Yoon Suk Yeol, was reportedly arrested by the country's Corruption Investigation Office for High Ranking officials, marking a first for a sitting leader in the country.
Following a failed attempt on Jan.3 to arrest the impeached president, agents from South Korea's Presidential Security Service again tried to block investigators from entering Yoon's residence.
Yonhap reported that approximately 3,000 police officers participated in the second attempt to gain entry to Yoon's compound.
Yoon stated in a pre-recorded video that the country's law has fallen and the CIO's investigation is illegal. He vowed to appear before the CIO to prevent bloodshed, according to Google translations of Korean reports.
The blue-chip index rose by 0.21%, while the small-cap Kosdaq fell by 0.44% in response to the news.
The South Korean won weakened slightly against the U.S. dollar, and was last trading at 1,459.75. Meanwhile, the yield on 10-year benchmark South Korean bonds rose.
A Seoul district court granted the CIO's request for an arrest warrant on Dec. 31, which was later extended after it expired on Jan. 6.
Yoon is accused of insurrection following his failed attempt to impose martial law on Dec. 3, an offense not shielded by presidential immunity and punishable by death.
Last month, Yoon announced a surprise late night broadcast and declared martial law, stating the need to safeguard the country from "North Korean communist forces" and "antistate forces." This marked the first time martial law has been declared in South Korea in over 40 years.
After voting down the declaration at the country's parliament, lawmakers filed impeachment motions against Yoon a few days later. Yoon was impeached on Dec. 14 and suspended from office.
The impeachment trial against Yoon in South Korea's Constitutional Court was opened on Jan. 14, but it was adjourned to Jan. 16 because Yoon did not appear.
