John Kerry characterizes Russia's conflict with Ukraine as a "pivotal moment" of the century.
- John Kerry, the former secretary of state and current U.S. climate policy chief, stated that Russia's war on Ukraine will be a "defining moment" for this century.
- Kerry stated that energy price volatility will persist for a brief period as nations attempt to exert pressure on Russia.
- If countries and businesses fail to make changes in the near term, it will be challenging for them to meet emissions targets by 2050.
John Kerry, special presidential envoy for climate, stated on Monday at CERAWeek by S&P Global that Russia's war on Ukraine will be a "defining moment" for this century, with volatile energy prices remaining a persistent issue.
The Russian invasion has disrupted global energy markets and supply chains, causing oil to reach $130 on Sunday evening, its highest price since 2008, and natural gas in Europe to trade at unprecedented levels.
During the Obama administration, Kerry, who served as secretary of state, stated that nations worldwide must unite to combat Putin's "illegal, unprovoked, and profoundly dangerous" war, which will cause volatility for a brief period.
Kerry stated that "this is a serious moment for all of us in the world, and it's also evidently serious in regards to what's happening to our planet."
He stated that companies and nations are not doing enough to transition to renewable energy sources.
According to Kerry, focusing on emissions-reduction targets for 2050 is misguided as the current decade is the critical one, and only immediate action will achieve the stated goals of 2050.
"To reach your destination, you must complete the necessary actions from 2020 to 2030," he stated.
The Biden administration is dedicated to adopting a comprehensive energy policy, according to Kerry.
