Jerome Powell, the Federal Reserve Chair, will address the Senate Banking Committee on Tuesday during his semiannual speech to Congress on monetary policy.
As the Fed remains on hold regarding interest rates, Powell's comments will be closely scrutinized for any hints about what it will take to start easing. At the Fed's June meeting, policymakers expressed concerns about the progress on inflation, stating that they still need to see more evidence that it's returning to the 2% target.
Powell stated that he and his colleagues desire to ensure that inflation is steadily decreasing towards 2% before initiating the process of easing or tightening policy.
Powell will testify before the House Financial Services Committee on Wednesday as per the Humphrey-Hawkins Act of 1978.
The Fed has made progress on inflation but requires more confidence before cutting rates.
