Southern California Edison has been requested by insurance companies to retain evidence pertaining to the catastrophic wildfires that ravaged Los Angeles, as stated in a regulatory filing.
Southern California Edison stated in a filing late Thursday that no fire agency has suggested that its electric facilities were responsible for starting the blaze. The utility added that it has filed an incident report out of caution.
The utility stated in its filing that it received evidence preservation notices from insurance company counsel regarding the fire, and online publications suggest that SCE equipment may be linked to its cause.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Eaton Fire started in Southern California Edison's service area, according to a statement from the parent company. The fire has since burned over 13,000 acres of land and destroyed at least 4,000 structures.
The utility's initial examination of the electrical circuit data for its energized transmission lines in the area revealed "no interruptions or electrical or operational irregularities until more than one hour after the reported start time of the fire."
Edison International shares shares fell 10% on Wednesday as the wildfires spread.
