On Wednesday morning at DC Fintech Week in Washington, D.C., Rostin Behnam, chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, is delivering a speech.
The CFTC attempted to prevent financial exchange Kalshi from offering election outcome bet contracts, but lost the suit in September and an appeals court lifted the temporary injunction.
The CFTC is appealing the ruling.
"For the past decade, the commission's stance on listing event contracts on political elections has remained consistent, and we believe it is illegal, said Behnam in a Bloomberg Television interview on Tuesday. However, since we are currently involved in an ongoing legal challenge, we will allow these contracts and do our best to safeguard the markets' integrity."
The CFTC is facing challenges in regulating digital assets due to their rapid evolution and the need for Congress to establish a framework for consumer protection.
Throughout the expansion of the digital asset class, I have been most concerned that everyday Americans continue to fall victim to one scam after another, despite the lack of completed legislative response, as I testified before the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry in July.
He emphasized the urgent need for federal legislation to establish a regulatory framework that safeguards American investors and the financial system from potential risks.
