Microsoft announced on Thursday that it is beginning the process of rolling out a major update to its Windows 11 operating system for PCs.

In fiscal 2024, Windows accounted for only 9% of Microsoft's $245 billion in revenue, but its revenue was highly profitable. The widespread use of Windows on computers helped Microsoft attract clients to its Azure cloud. Despite the upcoming end of support for Windows 10 in October 2025, product enhancements continue.

The 2024 Update for Windows 11, or 24H2, aims to enhance fundamental PC capabilities, including Wi-Fi file downloads, document compression, and energy management.

New features are being added to PCs that can run Windows 11 in version 24H2.

You can control the energy consumption of your PC while it's plugged in, and have the option to reduce power draw.

Bluetooth LE Audio-enabled hearing aids allow you to connect to your computer and stream audio, adjust volume levels, and balance directly.

With the advent of Wi-Fi 7 routers, you can now experience faster internet speeds than with Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E. These devices can send data at a higher throughput, allowing your PC to download files more quickly and run multiple devices at high speed, whether at home or in the office.

You can easily connect other devices to your Wi-Fi network by scanning a QR code in the Settings app.

Selecting an image file with the .JXR extension can enhance the contrast of your desktop background if your device supports high dynamic range (HDR) signals.

If you connect your phone to your PC wirelessly via Bluetooth, you can control files on your phone from the Settings app and view them in a folder within the File Explorer app. This is a convenient alternative to connecting your phone to your PC with a USB cable.

You can reduce the size of the clock in the System tray by selecting "Show abbreviated time and date" in the "Time & language" settings.

You can compress files in 7-Zip or .tar format without downloading a program from the web. Simply select files in File Explorer, right-click, hover over "Compress to...", and choose from ZIP, 7z, or TAR options. Alternatively, you can use "Additional options" to adjust the compression level and method.

How to get the new features

To download version 24H2 of Windows 11, follow these steps: Open the Settings app and navigate to Windows Update. The update will become available for download when Microsoft predicts your device is ready. Microsoft will first release 24H2 to devices running versions 22H2 and 23H2 that have the "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available" option enabled in Windows Update.
