On Thursday, OpenAI announced its newest board member, Paul M. Nakasone, a retired U.S. Army general and former director of the National Security Agency. Nakasone was the longest-serving leader of the U.S. Cyber Command and chief of the Central Security Service.

OpenAI stated in a blog post that Mr. Nakasone's insights will aid in their efforts to enhance cybersecurity through AI by rapidly identifying and responding to threats.

OpenAI announced that Nakasone will be a member of its Safety and Security Committee, which is currently assessing the company's procedures and security measures for 90 days. The committee's recommendations will be presented to the board and the public after the evaluation is complete.

Nakasone is now a member of the board, alongside Adam D'Angelo, Larry Summers, Bret Taylor, Sam Altman, Dr. Sue Desmond-Hellmann, Nicole Seligman, and Fidji Simo.

As the significance of large language models in the tech industry grows and competition intensifies in the generative artificial intelligence market, OpenAI is strengthening its board and executive team. Despite its rapid expansion since the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022, the company has faced controversy and high-level employee departures.

Kevin Weil, a former president at Planet Labs, has been appointed as the new chief product officer at OpenAI. Weil was previously a senior vice president at Twitter and a vice president at Facebook and Instagram. The focus of Weil's product team will be to apply research to products and services that benefit consumers, developers, and businesses.
