The Amazon Labor Union has decided to align with the Teamsters.
  • The Amazon Labor Union and the Teamsters announced that members of the union have voted to affiliate with the Teamsters, according to a joint statement.
  • In 2022, Amazon's warehouse in Staten Island, New York, held a historic election that brought the ALU to the national spotlight.
  • After stalled contract negotiations, the new agreement may force Amazon to participate in negotiations.

On Tuesday, the first group of U.S. warehouse workers to organize as a labor union announced their decision to affiliate with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.

The ALU and the Teamsters announced earlier this month that they were taking steps to affiliate, with roughly 98% of ALU members voting in favor of joining up with the Teamsters.

The ALU, a union in New York, is still trying to negotiate with Amazon, and the news could potentially force the company to come to the bargaining table.

The Teamsters and ALU, with determination, bravery, and confidence, will unite to fiercely advocate for Amazon workers' right to obtain decent jobs and safe working conditions through a union agreement, as stated by Sean O'Brien, general president of the Teamsters.

Two years ago, the ALU gained national attention after winning a historic victory at Amazon's JFK8 warehouse in Staten Island, New York. The group, founded by current and former JFK8 employees, initially started as a grassroots, independent labor organization.

The ALU has been unable to come to terms with Amazon, which wants to disregard the 2022 election results. This has resulted in divisions among some members and ALU president Chris Smalls. The union is planning to hold an election this summer to choose its next leader.

The Amazon division of the Teamsters union was established in 2021 to aid and finance workers at the company in their unionization efforts.

The newly formed local chapter, ALU-International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 1, has the right to organize Amazon warehouse workers "in all five boroughs of New York," as per the agreement announced on Tuesday.
