  • Amazon is making Grubhub food delivery a fixture of its Prime membership program.
  • The e-commerce giant previously offered members a yearlong subscription to Grubhub.
  • As it aims to attract and retain members, Amazon has consistently expanded its array of Prime program advantages.

The latest effort to enhance the benefits of the $139-a-year loyalty program is by offering free Grubhub subscriptions to Prime members.

Amazon has made Grubhub a permanent fixture of its Prime membership program, offering free delivery on orders over $12 to both Prime and non-Prime members who place orders through Amazon's website and mobile app.

In recent years, Amazon has been expanding its Prime benefits to attract and retain members, despite increasing competition from other loyalty programs. The company now offers discounted One Medical memberships, in addition to existing perks such as fast shipping and video streaming.

In July 2022, Amazon secured a 2% stake in Grubhub, the U.S. subsidiary of Just Eat Takeaway.com. Additionally, Amazon has the option to increase its stake to 15% of Grubhub if it meets certain performance factors, such as the number of new customers added.

In 2015, Amazon launched Amazon Restaurants, a food-delivery service that enabled Prime members to order meals from local restaurants and have them delivered by its fleet of drivers, competing with companies like Grubhub, Uber Eats, and DoorDash.

Four years after shuttering Amazon Restaurants, the company has expanded its selection of nonperishable items and pantry staples available through its site. Additionally, Amazon offers online ordering from its Whole Foods and Fresh supermarkets.
