For a limited time, American Express is increasing the welcome bonus offers on three Hilton cards: the Hilton Honors American Express Card (from 80,000 to 100,000 Hilton points), the Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card (from 130,000 to 155,000 points) and the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card (from 150,000 to 175,000 points).

CNBC Select provides a comprehensive guide to the enhanced credit card welcome bonuses.

Hilton American Express welcome bonus and perks

You have options with the three Hilton credit cards offering increased welcome bonuses. The Hilton Aspire is the premium card with Diamond elite status and generous benefits. For those not fully committed to the Hilton brand, the Hilton Honors Card is a good starting option with no annual fee (see rates and fees).

According to travel rewards experts, Hilton points are worth approximately 0.5 to 0.6 cents each on average. This means that these bonuses could potentially earn you between $500 and over $1,000 towards stays at Hilton-affiliated hotels. However, the value of Hilton points can sometimes be even higher when redeemed at certain properties.

Hilton Honors American Express Card

The Hilton Honors American Express Card now provides 100,000 Hilton points after spending $2,000 in the first six months, which is 20,000 points more than the previous offer with the same spending requirements. These 100,000 points are worth an average of $500 to $600.

The Hilton Honors American Express Card is free of an annual fee (check rates and fees), and it offers numerous advantages including:

  • Having a complimentary Hilton Silver status means you get perks like free bottled water and a spa discount.
  • Achieve Hilton Gold status by spending $20,000 or more on the card annually.
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Terms apply

Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card

The Hilton Honors American Express Surpass Card provides 155,000 Hilton points after spending $3,000 in the first six months, which is equivalent to $775 to $930 on average.

The Hilton Surpass Card comes with an annual fee of $150, along with a range of benefits (refer to rates and fees).

  • You can earn up to $200 in Hilton credit (up to $50 per quarter)
  • Complimentary Hilton Gold status (grants perks such as space-available room upgrades)
  • Earn Hilton Diamond status when you spend $40,000 in a calendar year
  • Earn a Free Night Reward after you spend $15,000 in a calendar year
  • Purchase protection
  • Baggage insurance
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Terms apply

Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card

New Hilton Honors Aspire cardholders can earn 175,000 Hilton points after spending $6,000 on purchases with their card in the first six months of membership. Despite the $550 annual fee (see rates and fees), the benefits are worth the cost. Additionally, the 175,000-point welcome bonus can provide over $1,000 in value.

Every year on your card anniversary, you'll receive an Annual Free Night Reward that can be redeemed at most Hilton hotels and resorts, except for a few exclusions. This perk alone may make the card worth keeping for those who use it at expensive hotels.

Earning two Free Night Rewards each year is possible by spending $30,000 on the card in a calendar year and an additional $30,000 (totaling at least $60,000) within the same year.

Other card benefits include:

  • The Hilton Diamond status offers perks such as a 48-hour room guarantee and a 100% bonus on all Hilton points earned during a stay at a Hilton property.
  • Each year, up to $400 in Hilton resort credit can be earned (up to $200 back semi-annually).
  • Each quarter, you can receive up to $50 in flight credit towards your next trip, up to a maximum of $200 per year.
  • Up to $189 in CLEAR Plus credit per calendar year
  • When booking a minimum two-night stay at Hiltonhonorsaspirecard.com, you will receive a $100 on-property credit at participating Waldorf Astoria and Conrad properties.
  • Trip cancellation and interruption insurance
  • Baggage insurance
  • Extended warranty coverage
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Terms apply

What these bonuses can get you

There is no reliable way to determine the cost of a Hilton hotel stay other than to search the Hilton website for the specific dates and locations you are interested in.

The Hilton loyalty program offers several benefits that enhance the worth and adaptability of your points. You can combine your points with family members at no cost, making it simpler to book a family vacation or expensive hotels. Additionally, you can utilize Hilton's 5th night free on award stays when you have any level of Hilton elite status (which you receive for free with all Hilton cards). This perk is particularly advantageous for extended stays because every 5th night is free on stays of up to 20 nights. As a result, you won't have to pay any additional points for the 5th night, 10th night, 15th night, or 20th night.

You can easily book luxurious stays with Hilton points, such as the Waldorf Astoria Grand Wailea in Hawaii for 110,000 points a night, which can cost over $1,000 a night. If you can earn an intro bonus from any of these cards, there are many opportunities to unlock extreme value.

Hilton Amex welcome bonus eligibility

American Express typically limits earning the welcome bonus from a Hilton card to once per lifetime per card. If you have or have had a specific Hilton card before, you're unlikely to be able to earn the bonus from that particular card again.

If you have previously had a Hilton Honors card, it will not affect your chances of qualifying for Hilton Aspire or Hilton Surpass.

Alternatives to the Hilton credit cards

Membership Rewards points from American Express can be transferred to Hilton at a 1:2 ratio, meaning each point is worth two Hilton points. The Platinum Card from American Express is a great way to quickly earn Membership Rewards points, with new card members able to earn 80,000 points after spending $8,000 on purchases in the first six months of membership. This equates to 160,000 Hilton points. Additionally, American Express Platinum cardholders receive complimentary Hilton Gold status upon enrollment.

The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card offers travel rewards that can be used to book any hotel, and Hilton is not a transfer partner. However, you can redeem Capital One miles for one cent each towards any eligible travel purchase. This card comes with a 75,000-mile bonus that can be earned after spending $4,000 on purchases within three months from account opening, which is worth $750 in travel (including Hilton hotels).

Bottom line

If you frequently stay at Hilton Hotels and travel often, you may be eligible for the welcome bonuses offered by the Hilton Honors American Express Card, Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card, or Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card. These enhanced offers allow you to book a range of accommodations, from a layover at an airport hotel to a stay at a luxury resort.
