  • This week, the Biden administration declared that over 150,000 federal student loan borrowers will have their debts cancelled.
  • Under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, 61,000 disabled borrowers and thousands more are eligible for loan forgiveness.

This week, the Biden administration declared another round of federal student loan forgiveness, with over 150,000 individuals set to benefit from the approximately $4.2 billion in loan cancellation. This announcement was made just days before President Joe Biden departs from office.

Here's who qualifies for the relief.

Students from schools that misled them

Over 85,000 individuals will have their federal student debt erased through the U.S. Department of Education's Borrower Defense Loan Discharge program. Eligibility for this program is based on the closure of the school while enrolled, deception by the school, or the receipt of an inadequate education.

The Education Department has approved group discharges for 73,600 students who attended schools owned by the Center for Excellence in Higher Education, including Independence University and California College San Diego. The $1.15 billion in debt forgiveness will be given to borrowers who attended these institutions between Jan. 1, 2006 and Aug. 1, 2021, the Education Department announced.

If you attended any location of Drake College of Business between Jan. 1, 2008 and July 31, 2015, and your student debt was canceled, you are one of the 11,000 borrowers whose debt totaled $107 million.

The Criminal Justice Program at Lincoln Technical Institute's Lowell, Massachusetts, campus and the Somerville, Massachusetts, campus between 2010 and 2013 will have their federal student debt cleared. A total of 280 borrowers will receive $1.4 million in loan forgiveness.

Even if eligible borrowers did not apply for aid, they will still receive it automatically if they attended these institutions, the department stated.

Borrowers with disabilities

On Monday, the Education Department announced that 61,000 federal student loan borrowers with a "total and permanent" disability will receive $2.5 billion in debt erasure.

Some borrowers were automatically approved for debt forgiveness through data matches with the U.S. Social Security Administration and the Department of Veteran Affairs, while others applied for loan discharge.

Eligible borrowers may receive a Total and Permanent Disability, or TPD, Discharge if they have a severe and permanent mental or physical disability that prevents them from working. Proof of disability can be provided by a doctor, the Social Security Administration, or the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Public servants

Under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program, the Education Department granted loan forgiveness to 6,100 borrowers, totaling $465 million in debt relief.

In 2007, former President George W. Bush signed into law a program that enables government employees and certain not-for-profit organizations to have their federal student loans forgiven after 10 years of consistent payments.

The Biden administration has made an effort to reverse the trend of borrowers being excluded from PSLF due to technicalities. It has expanded eligibility and enabled individuals to reapply for relief, provided they were employed in the public sector and were making debt payments.

Borrowers can search for a list of qualifying employers and access the employer certification form with the PSLF help tool. Visit studentaid.gov for more information on program requirements.
