The "Great Reshuffle" is a shift in workplace culture that is taking place right now, with millions of Americans rethinking their work and work-life balance. In response, companies are meeting their employees' needs by offering remote work, flexible hours, four-day workweeks, and more compensation options. This story is part of a series exploring this topic.

Would an additional paid day off or a workday without meetings significantly improve employee well-being?

For tech giant LinkedIn, the answer is a resounding yes.

In response to the burnout, anxiety, and exhaustion faced by many of its employees due to the Covid-19 pandemic, LinkedIn introduced a new initiative called LiftUp.

The resource hub offers a series of enjoyable events, global well-being days off, and meeting-free days as gifts of time.

In addition to a week-long company shutdown in April 2021 and a year-end "Silver Linings Show" hosted by comedian Trevor Noah, the company also organized a music festival and a day of random acts of kindness.

Nina McQueen, LinkedIn's vice president of benefits and employee experience, stated in the company's 2022 Global Talent Trends report that the surprises and delights were intended to reignite enthusiasm, elevate spirits, and inject some enjoyment into the experience.

LinkedIn's DNA now includes LiftUp, which was initially launched in response to a crisis.

Jennifer Shappley, LinkedIn's global head of talent acquisition, stated that employees require support and it's crucial for them to understand the organization values them.

She explained that what people require currently is assistance with balancing, and LiftUp is an illustration of how we are aiding them in achieving that.

Despite being two years into the pandemic, employees are still facing challenges. According to a survey by HR tech company Workhuman, 54% of workers feel mentally drained after work, while 44% struggle to stay focused on the job. The poll, conducted by Workhuman IQ, involved 2,268 full-time workers in the U.S., Canada, U.K., and Ireland from November 12 to 14.

The LiftUp initiative was referred to as a blessing by Nawal Fakhoury, the director of employee experience at LinkedIn.

"I never took a break or time off until I was at the point of needing it, but the surprise days off were a much-needed relief," she said.

Melissa Doman, an organizational psychologist, believes that a company-wide day off is advantageous for employees. According to her, workers can devote their attention to other matters without any feelings of guilt because everyone else is not working on that day.

Doman, author of "Yes, You Can Talk About Mental Health at Work...Here's Why (And How To Do It Really Well)," stated that while work is important and he loves his job, it is not the only aspect of life.

She emphasized the importance of giving people the freedom to have a human experience outside of work. In the corporate world, it's not necessary to work for eight hours straight.

“People need to stop treating it like it will.”

LinkedIn is one of several companies taking steps to address employee burnout by offering perks such as flexible schedules and a four-day workweek. This reflects a growing emphasis on workplace culture that prioritizes employee well-being.

Doman expressed happiness that the pandemic has made people realize that being valued and having their well-being valued doesn't always require a financial reward.

According to LinkedIn's report, 63% of job-seekers prioritize work-life balance when choosing a new job, while 60% focus on compensation and benefits.

The company believes its culture is resonating with job-seekers and employees alike.

In the past three quarters, we have hired more individuals than we have ever done so in our company's history, as stated by Shappley.

LiftUp has increased Fakhoury's awareness of her direct reports' well-being and influenced her approach to her own work-life balance.

"This constant reminder to prioritize self-care has helped me reevaluate my approach to life," she stated.
