Larger companies in California may soon have the option of implementing a shortened, 32-hour workweek.
A shortened workweek may become the reality for many employees in California.
A bill is currently being considered by the state legislature that proposes to reduce the standard workweek to 32 hours for companies with over 500 employees. This legislation would not result in any reduction in pay, and employees who work more would be compensated at a rate of no less than 1.5 times their regular rate of pay.
Democratic Assembly member Cristina Garcia, who is one of the bill's sponsors, stated that it doesn't make sense to still hold onto a work schedule that was suitable for the Industrial Revolution.
The time to make the shift is now, as the Covid-19 pandemic and "Great Resignation" have made it clear, she said.
Over 4.4 million Americans quit their jobs in February alone, and the trend of leaving jobs continues to increase.
Garcia stated that there is no link between working longer hours and increased productivity.
The bill is opposed by the California Chamber of Commerce, which considers it a "job killer" due to the additional costs it will impose on businesses.
Ashley Hoffman, public policy advocate at the California Chamber Commerce, wrote to Assembly member Evan Low that labor costs are frequently one of the highest expenses a business has to bear.
The substantial rise in labor expenses will impede businesses' capacity to recruit or establish fresh employment opportunities, thereby constraining job expansion in California.
Four-day workweek
The four-day workweek is gaining popularity among companies as a way to improve employee well-being, with proponents claiming that the same amount of work can be accomplished in a shorter timeframe.
This month, numerous companies in the U.S. and Canada are participating in a six-month trial of a four-day workweek, spearheaded by 4 Day Week Global.
To achieve 100% productivity while working only 80% of the time and receiving 100% pay, employees must work more efficiently, such as reducing unnecessary meetings.
According to Joe O'Connor, CEO of 4 Day Week Global, companies are increasingly recognizing that improving quality of life is the key to gaining a competitive advantage, and that offering reduced-hour, productivity-focused work arrangements is the way to achieve this.

Kickstarter, a crowdfunding platform, is participating in the North American trial. Its CEO, Aziz Hasan, stated in July that this participation is a way for the company to strengthen its position as a collective.
If we focus our time and attention as best as we can in those four days, can we have a more potent impact on the things we care about professionally, which will open up a wider range for us personally?
There are no plans to reverse the shortened workweek for those who did so during the pandemic.
Uncharted CEO Banks Benitez stated that many parts of the workweek are unproductive, as the company transitioned to a four-day workweek in 2020.
Thinking differently has been a great outcome of the challenge we faced.
