The "Great Reshuffle" is a shift in workplace culture that is taking place right now, with millions of Americans rethinking their work and work-life balance. Sevdha Thompson's average workday can vary greatly from week to week or month to month.
She may spend one week working outdoors in the Jamaican sun and the next week staying at an AirBNB with a view of a Costa Rican rainforest.
As a remote digital producer for Coalition Technologies, she can work on marketing and website design projects from any location globally.
"Traveling is something I love, as I have family all over the place," she stated.
The ability to spend time with important people worldwide is highly significant due to the flexibility it offers.
Thompson, who is currently residing in Orlando, Florida, was initially hired by Coalition Technologies in Los Angeles in July 2020. After moving to Kingston, Jamaica, during the Covid-19 pandemic to be near her family, she has also spent time in New Orleans, Atlanta, Panama, Texas, and Oklahoma. Although she considers Jamaica her home base, she has traveled to various locations.
Last year, she spent three weeks in Costa Rica, exploring the nation and multiple rainforests. She stated that the company's accommodating work hours allowed her to adjust her schedule as needed.
Thompson, in her early 30s and traveling with her fiancé, was able to deeply explore various aspects of the country and culture that typical tourists usually cannot access.
I had more time and flexibility to explore these areas and therefore gained a more local experience.
She has also traveled to take on jobs as a professional Bollywood and belly dancer. When selecting a place to stay in each location, she prioritizes having a strong internet connection. She has also worked while on the go, including from cars, an airport lounge, and a boat.
Coalition Technologies' more than 250 employees work from various locations worldwide, including the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, as well as India, Germany, and South Africa.

President Jordan Brannon stated that the tech company's policy was driven by the need to compete with larger firms for talent.
Since its inception in 2009, Coalition Technologies has been a remote-first company, primarily due to the heavy traffic in Los Angeles, where the company was located. With the influx of big tech companies into the area, known as Silicon Beach, Brannon and his team were forced to search for talent in various cities, states, and countries.
Brannon stated that in order to compete with well-funded, publicly traded companies and startups, we must source talent in a way that enables us to grow without prioritizing short-term profit objectives for shareholders.
Remote jobs that allow employees to work from anywhere are rare, according to FlexJobs. The career website found that about 95% of remote jobs require employees to be located in a specific location. These requirements may be based on state, city, country, or even regions within a country.
Legal and tax concerns, time-zone differences, and availability for in-person meetings are all factors to consider.
One of the biggest challenges facing Coalition Technologies is dealing with multiple time zones, as most clients are in the U.S. eastern time zone, which requires workers to adjust their schedules. To address this issue, the company uses a common calendar where employees can synchronize their schedules and coordinate meetings.
The management team handles legal, tax, and financial matters related to the various work locations. For example, regional pay adjustments are made based on the cost of living in a specific area, but there is also the possibility of earning extra pay based on a team's performance.
Brannon stated that the trade-off is worth it because it benefits the company in several ways. Firstly, it helps the company compete for workers. Secondly, employees are happy. Thirdly, it allows Coalition Technologies to bring more talented people to client accounts and projects. Lastly, it enables the company to staff up quickly since there is a large pool of candidates to choose from.
He stated that they have been devoted to this for a decade and have no intention of altering their stance.
Although Thompson is uncertain about her future location in the U.S., she plans to eventually return and stay in Jamaica for the time being to assist her family and continue her travels.
“All of those little things mean a lot,” she said.
There are numerous flexible ways to spend your time that you wouldn't be able to in a more structured job.
