A four-day workweek doesn't mean less work; here's how to make it effective.
The four-day workweek is gaining popularity and has many supporters.
According to a survey by cloud-software vendor Qualtrics, 92% of U.S. workers support the idea of a shorter workweek.
An announcement by Belgium's federal government has led to the discovery that workers in the country's public and private sectors can opt to take a day off workweek if they desire.
A four-day workweek may not necessarily result in a reduced workload.
In Belgium, employees work four 10-hour days per week, while a global trial of a 100-80-100 model is set to begin. Under this model, workers will receive 100% of their pay for 80% of the time and maintain 100% productivity. On April 1, 37 North American companies will begin a six-month pilot of this approach.
Here's how to secure a four-day-workweek job: Meet the company that provides its contract workers with benefits and job security. This worker took three months off with pay to hike in Europe.
The cultural shift in the workplace is leading to more employers prioritizing their employees' well-being.
Juliet B. Schor, a sociology professor at Boston College, stated that in the past, the logic of work and companies was centered on the belief that individuals needed to work longer and harder.
Schor stated that since it has flipped, there's an idea that people can be more efficient and accomplish five days' worth of work in just four days.
The Wanderlust Group, an outdoor technology company, follows the 100-80-100 model, and CEO and co-founder Mike Melillo often questions its effectiveness.
Melillo stated that people believe the four-day workweek, which he implemented at Wanderlust during the pandemic, is a characteristic of Gen Z and millennials' entitlement and call for less work.
The company reduced the number of meetings and improved communication, resulting in the same amount of work being accomplished in four days instead of five. Staff felt recharged on Tuesday after a three-day weekend, as stated by Melillo.
"TWG is experiencing an increase in job applications and producing better results than ever before," Melillo stated.
According to the company, last year's revenue increased by 61% year over year, and Wanderlust has a 98% retention rate, with applications up 800% from the previous year.
While at work, employees engage in various activities besides their job duties, such as browsing social media or conversing with colleagues. A 2017 study by Vouchercloud in the U.K. revealed that the average employee spends two hours and 53 minutes daily working productively.
A 2018 survey by the Workforce Institute at Kronos revealed that almost half of full-time workers believe it should take less than five hours a day to complete their job without interruptions. The survey involved 2,772 employees from eight countries.
Another retailer, Primary, believes that efficiency is crucial to achieving success. Similar to Wanderlust, they have reduced their meeting hours and set aside some time during the day for focused work. Despite the changes, their goals and ambitions remain unchanged, and their products continue to arrive on schedule in the warehouses.
Christina Carbonell, Primary's co-founder and co-CEO, explained that believing in the productivity of people in a four-day week, with three days off to manage life and flexibility to catch up, would enable them to achieve their goals even better.
As the focus on work tasks increases, team building may suffer.
Buffer, a social media software company, reduced the number of hangouts and casual events in 2020 to fit five days of work into four. However, the New York-based firm saw its engagement scores decrease, prompting it to plan intentional team building within the four-day workweek this year.
The majority of the team, 91%, have reported being happier and more productive since the implementation of a shortened workweek.
Rewritten sentence: One can choose to spread out their hours into five shorter days.
According to Buffer's director of people, Nicole Miller, if one can effectively manage their workload by reducing their workweek by 20% while still achieving their goals, projects, and deadlines, it demonstrates the flexibility of the workweek.
"We had more flexibility previously, which is why we're seeing excellent outcomes now," she stated.
Our teammates can see our anecdotal happiness, contentment, freedom, and trust through our actions.
