The Rafah attack has sparked international outrage, increasing the pressure on Israel.
  • "I urge an immediate ceasefire and full respect for international law in Rafah, where there are no safe areas for Palestinian civilians. These operations must stop," France's President Emmanuel Macron wrote on X.
  • The U.S. described the images from the attack as "devastating" and "heartbreaking," but did not demand a halt to the Rafah operation.
  • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the attack as a tragic error.

On Sunday night, more than 45 people, including children, were killed in a tent camp for displaced Palestinian refugees in the southern Gazan city of Rafah due to an Israeli military attack. Global leaders expressed shock and outrage over the incident.

The Israel Defense Force initially stated that it used "precise munitions" and "intelligence" to target two senior Hamas leaders in the area. However, after news emerged that the strike started a fire that engulfed the camp, leaving destroyed shelters and charred bodily remains whose images flooded social media, the IDF is now investigating the event.

Emmanuel Macron, the French President, expressed his anger on social media about the Israeli strikes that resulted in the deaths of many displaced people in Rafah.

""I call for an immediate ceasefire and full respect for international law as there are no safe areas in Rafah for Palestinian civilians," Macron's post stated."

Guido Crosetto, the Italian Defense Minister, stated that the Palestinian people are being oppressed without regard for the rights of innocent men, women, and children who have no ties to Hamas. He emphasized that this treatment is unjustifiable.

The U.S. described the images from the attack as "devastating" and "heartbreaking," but did not demand a halt to the Rafah operation.

"The National Security Council spokesperson stated that Israel has the right to target Hamas and that the recent strike resulted in the deaths of two senior Hamas terrorists responsible for attacks against Israeli civilians. However, the spokesperson emphasized that Israel must take all necessary precautions to safeguard civilians."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the attack as a tragic error.

Despite our efforts to avoid harming non-combatants, a tragic mistake occurred in Rafah, resulting in the evacuation of one million non-combatant residents.

The military offensive in Rafah, which was condemned by the International Court of Justice as "disastrous," led to an attack two days later.

The court lacks the ability to directly enforce its orders. Following the ICJ's ruling, Israeli airstrikes targeted Rafah, and on Tuesday Israeli tanks entered the city center, according to local witnesses cited by Reuters.
